A former teacher and supervisor at Stewart-Marchman-Act, an addiction and mental health treatment center, was arrested for showing pornography to a teenager and masturbating in front of him, a Volusia County sheriff’s spokesman said.

Kern C. Cox, 37, of Ormond Beach, was arrested Tuesday and charged with showing obscene material to a minor and use of a child in a sexual performance, and was booked in the Volusia County Branch Jail on $50,000 bail, said sheriff’s spokesman Andrew Gant.

Cox worked in a drug addiction treatment program for juveniles at Stewart-Marchman-Act Behavioral Healthcare’s Residential Adolescent Program.

In addition to his job in the program, Cox also recently worked for a short time as a chorus teacher at Mainland High School in Daytona Beach. He has since been removed from both positions, Gant said. Cox formerly was also a child care worker at the YMCA in Port Orange.

The 16-year-old boy came forward to a supervisor at Stewart-Marchman-Act in December. The teenager reported that on the night of Dec. 14, Cox asked him to come into his office, where the teen was shown a pornographic video. He said the suspect proceeded to masturbate in front of him and attempted to get him to join in, Gant said.

Cox denied the incident occurred and said he had not viewed pornography since high school. However, video surveillance from the hallway outside his office confirmed the boy entered Cox’s office at 10:08 p.m. and left at 10:29 on the night of the allegations. An examination of Cox’s cellphone revealed that between 10:11 and 10:21 p.m. multiple pornographic websites were accessed.

One of the videos matched the specific details reported by the victim, Gant said.
