A former Jacksonville middle school teacher who was once a teacher of the year nominee is headed to three years in prison for requesting nude pictures of girls he was contacting on social media.

A former Jacksonville middle school teacher arrested last September on charges of promoting sexual performance and sending sexually explicit photos to minors has been sentenced to three years in prison, according to court records.

Kristopher Paul Beckstrom, 43, of Templeton Road was a Landon Middle School music teacher and former Teacher of the Year nominee. He changed his plea to guilty last week and was additionally sentenced to mandatory psycho-sexual counseling and decreed a registered sexual offender.

The investigation started began after a victim revealed inappropriate contact had been made through social media, according to Beckstrom’s arrest report. The victim said she received requests from an unknown man in 2016 on both Instagram and Snapchat. Shortly after accepting the request, the victim said she began getting messages requesting nude pictures.

An investigation revealed fake Instagram and Snapchat accounts were created to give the appearance that the user was a 15-year-old boy. Investigators believe the user was targeting random people as well as past students from Landon Middle. The victim got a message from another female user who was concerned that the male user was not who he said he was. When a second victim confronted him, he asked her not to tell anyone that he was a teacher with a family, according to the report.

Beckstrom had been employed with the school district since 2001 and had not subject to any previous investigations, officials said.
